Tsughrughasheni Church

Tsughrughasheni is a Georgian Orthodox church in the Bolnisi District, Georgia. It is situated approximately 2 kilometers from Bolnisi Sioni basilica, on the right bank of the Bolnisistsqali River.

The church was built in 1212–1222 supposedly by King George IV Lasha of the Bagrationi Dynasty.

I first discovered and visited Tsughrughasheni church and monastery in mid-December during a day trip to Bolnisi. It was a bit hard actually to get here physically, as there was some road construction works still going on (there is a newly paved road build straight to the monastery complex). Luckily we got here after all, and as we were the only visitors at the site, the father Seraphim greeted us at the gate and gave us a key to the church. 

Father Seraphim is a really great priest, friendly, knowledgeable and humble. Father was accompanied with two German shepherd dogs. During our short conversation father Seraphim confirmed that now, once the new road is built (which took them about 5 years to be done) - he thinks that now the tranquil life of the monastery will end.

The Tsughrughasheni church resembles stylistically the other Georgian churches from the 12th–13th centuries – Betania, Kvatakhevi, Pitareti – but it is smaller than those and has a higher cupola. The plan of the church is right-angled. The church is rich with the Georgian traditional ornaments adorned.

Welcome to the twentieth (#20) dividend income report, covering earnings I've made from dividend-paying stocks, peer to peer lending (both fiat and cryptocurrencies) in December 2018. 

In case you are wondering why I'm sharing online my earnings - the answer is pretty simple -  back in January 2017, I set a goal to reach one million dollars in my bank account by the time I will turn 60  26 years still to go). I believe in transparency and sharing dividend income reports every month helps me to observe my personal progress or bounces. Hopefully, those reports can give some inspiration to you as well. In short, last December turned out much better as I thought before. Despite last December was the first month when YOY growth was negative, I still really love this December. More on that bellow.

In total there were 10 great companies paying us dividends in December.

The YoY growth rate for my dividend income in December was negative - 7.53%. or it was 13.07 less than a year ago. The explanation is simple - SAF Tehnika from the Nasdaq Baltics decided not to pay out dividends this year and there were no extra from Latvijas Gāze, as it was in 2017... Despite I made less than a year ago I feel really strong regarding December, it's much better diversified than a year ago, and when speaking about goals for December 2019 I can see really good month here, but more on that at the end of the article.

The cumulative earnings for 2018 now are $1,466.83  which is exactly 122.24% from my goal of 2018 ($1200). Awesome I have beaten my yearly goal by extra $266. Isn't that awesome?

Goals for December 2019

This is my favorite part of the reports - trying to forecast/set goals for the next year. But before setting goals for December 2019 dividend income, let's see what I forecasted for this December year ago:

I'm looking to get about $200 in December 2018 dividend income

Boom. I missed my goal by about 40 bucks. It feels bad. To compensate that, I will direct an extra $40 USD toward investment on Mintos.com peer to peer platform next month. (Matching interest earned on Mintos.com Peer to Peer Lending Platform)

Now, when setting goal/forecast for December 2019 I have a $240 goal for the December 2019.  From today's perspective looks very possible.

We opted for Baltvilla hotel during our latest trip to Latvia at the end of 2018 (pre-New Year) - surprisingly but we paid less than EUR 40 for a stay here. I believe this has been the cheapest 4-star hotel I have stayed so far, thus the service was excellent. Breakfast was just amazing. Salmon in the breakfast, sure come to Latvia.

How To Upgrade Drupal 7 to 8 (With Multilingual Support)

Here comes another article, which has been in the blog's draft section since the start of 2017. In this article, I will share my notes on performing a major Drupal upgrade from 7 to 8 with multilingual support.

As a Drupal developer, I've been pretty conservative and don't rush for upgrades just because of upgrades, but here I was working with a website which was almost 8 years old (built from scratch on Drupal 7 in 2011)

What I don't like when upgrading from Drupal 7 to 8, is that the upgrade requires a fresh install of Drupal 8 site. Unfortunately, there are no still the magical one-click upgrade button (It's 2019 and not 2007, right)

In this Drupal tutorial, I will use the real example with actual content, modules and some custom fields - the site is not over customized, but it has some customization.

Let's start with a fresh Drupal 8 installation, follow this guide to learn more: How to Install & Config Drupal 8 on Ubuntu 14.04 + Ngnix

I own several Linode VPS's and deployment of new Drupal site took me about 5 minutes, depending on your hosting provider and your skills it might differ - but basically that's nothing complicated,

During the installation process I opted to install a minimal version as I love to take full control of settings enabled, but feel free to choose standard configuration profile.

Now, let's see how to perform an actual site and content upgrade

Make sure these modules are enabled on your Drupal 8 site: "Migrate," "Migrate Drupal," and "Migrate Drupal UI." A quick note, in Drupal 8, modules are renamed to Extend, though the path still is the same - /admin/modules

Next, visit the /upgrade page. When you do you will see this screen:

Press Continue to configure your migration source (see screenshot below). Enter the database credentials and path of your Drupal 6 or 7 site's files ( and press Review upgrade. If your Drupal 6 or Drupal 7 site uses a database prefix, be sure to expand the Advanced options and provide that prefix. Under the Source Files enter  local file directory containing your site (e.g. /var/www/docroot), or your site address (for example http://example.com).

If the database credentials are correct, the upgrade review page will list the sources and destinations existing or missing based on modules present on the source site. The page provides a summary of the upgrade paths found and missing and then details the missing ones first:

You cannot do anything directly on this page to fix these missing migrations. Some of them may just be missing implementations that need to be developed while others signify modules not installed on the destination site

There are still many things to do, like creating new or applying existing Drupal 8 theme.

Also, I should note, that not all body field contents were transferred during this upgrade. On the other hand that's the only major issue, I faced during this Drupal upgrade. As the site was not massive, under 100 nodes in total, I was able to recreate missing content parts manually by just copy/pasting from live Drupal 7 site to Drupal 8 site. 

How To Disable / Enable Windows 10 Update

Windows 10 updates might get annoying, and though they are much needed and it's not recommended to turn them off, in this article I will show one easy method how to disable and later enable Windows Update.

Understand the limitations of this method. While disabling the automatic update service will temporarily halt any Windows 10 cumulative updates, the service will re-enable itself after a certain amount of time. Here are the directions:

1. Press the Windows logo key + R at the same time to invoke the Run box.

2. Type services.msc and press Enter.

3. Scroll down to Windows Update, and double-click it.

4. In Startup type, select Disabled. Then click Apply and OK to save the settings.

To enable windows update, repeat the steps above and in startup mode chose Manual

Bolnisi Sioni Cathedral

Bolnisi Sioni Cathedral is a Georgian Orthodox basilica in the Bolnisi village of Bolnisi District, Georgia. The cathedral was built in 478–493. It is the oldest extant church building in Georgia. Bishop David was the overseeing church leader for the construction of Bolnisi Sioni.

It took me more than 7 years of living in Georgia to visit for the first time Bolnisi and Bolnisi Sioni at the end of December 2018, though I was familiar that there are one of the oldest historical documents of the Georgian alphabet.​

Bolnisi Sioni Cathedral is known for its Georgian inscriptions. These are one of the oldest historical documents of the Georgian alphabet. This church is the first Georgian building to have a completion date on the exterior. Bolnisi Sioni’s decorative scheme was a Sasanian style. The southern and central parts of the church are adorned with curling vine scrolls, arabesques, and foliate motifs. Uniform masonry blocks were used to build on to the original building’s late antiquity remnants on the southern façade

The country of Georgia was in contact with Persia during the time of Bolnisi Sioni’s construction. Evidence of this is in the decoration of the building. The sculpture and embellishments of Bolnisi Sioni and other surrounding Georgian churches are influenced from Iranian, Armenian, and Near Eastern art and architecture. The hunting depictions and sculpture are similar to Iranian 4th and 5th century art and architecture.

It was at the end of 2018, we were wandering around Tbilisi botanical garden, to discover Zip Line, when I thought - hmm, there is a good observation point from which we can see Tbilisi TV tower, Narikala fortress and even Tabor monastery. 

I decided to make a quick experiment and was shooting panoramic photography. The result?

2018 in Review and Financial Goals for 2019

I'm 33 now and I have a goal to save one million dollars by the time I will turn 60. That's 27 years to go. I've been documenting my journey towards financial independence for the past two years already

In today's article, I will review the past year of 2018 and take a quick glimpse at the New Year of 2019.

Just like in the previous year, 2017 for me was a year of peer to peer lending, dividend-paying stocks and  - cryptocurrencies. Speaking of cryptocurrencies 2018 was really bad for my long-term crypto holdings and whipped out all the great gains we made in 2017.

At the start of 2018, I planned to invest about 42% of my annual net income, the planned amount for 2018 was $10,700.18, I managed to invest little more ($11,066.07) at the end of the year. I exceeded my initial plan by $365.89. In 2018, on the average I was investing at the pace of $922/mo, that's slightly less than back in 2017 ($1,000)

Net Worth value at the end of 2018

Starting June 2018, my portfolio has entered into a negative value growth ending 2018 with a negative -30.81% YTD growth and -19.31% Since the start of the portfolio in 2017.

A year ago I was quite optimistic and looked to reach at least $25,000 in net worth value. Unfortunately, there were just two months in 2018, when total net worth was larger than $20,000. I closed 2018 with $18,685.40.

Despite I managed to invest more than $11,000 this year, I barely managed to increase my net worth by a humble $2,600 or things went wrong almost everywhere in 2018 and I lost in value (YTD) EUR 7,380 / USD 8,465. Ouch, that hurts!

Also, I'm looking to reach 25K net worth value by the end of 2018. 

Let's see if we can apply some math here:

$16,077.05 (portfolio value January 1st, 2018) + $10,700.18 (planned additional investment throughout the year) = $26,777.23

Now let's do some crazy stuff and imagine that in 2018 I would see another 30% year over year value growth:

$26,777.23 + 30% = $34,810.399

Holly cow. It's hard to believe in such numbers (and probably there is no need for that), but in general this is how compounding works (ok, it's both compounding and value growth in this case)

Instead of +30% year over year growth, I got a negative - 30% year over year growth in 2018. That happens!

Now, the good news - In 2018 dividend yield (on cost) for my investment portfolio was about 6.30% (up from 5.50% in 2017), here is the breakdown by positions

• Mintos.com peer to peer lending: EUR 591.14 (yield 14.82%)
• Nasdaq Baltics: EUR 386.56 (yield 5.04%)
• EU stocks: EUR 74.26 (yield 4.65%)
• US stocks: EUR 154.76 (yield 3.61)
• Poloniex.com crypto lending: EUR 58.64 (yield 2.18%)

Now, in total in dividend income for 2018 I received EUR 1,265.36 / USD $1,466.84)

In general, it means that in a true passive income I made $4.02 daily, by doing nothing much, just keeping stake at great companies and lending out money via peer to peer platforms. On the other hand, I spend about an hour a day to research, analyze,  make future decisions.

Financial Goals for 2019

I'm looking to invest 53% (my age + 10%) from income I've made in 2018, that's about $11,871.70. 

For 2019 I plan to invest in stocks, peer to peer lending and cryptocurrencies. More or less here is the plan for invested amounts:

• Stocks: $7,000
• Peer to Peer Lending: $4,000
• Crytptocurencies: ~ $1,200

Also, I would love to keep at least 5% in cash. 

For 2019 I'm looking on a minimum $2,045 annual dividend income (about $170/mo or $5.60 daily)

I'm looking to reach net worth value $30,000 by the end of 2019. 

Zip Line Tbilisi (Georgia)

Zip Line Tbilisi is another cool thing to do while in Georgia.

I might be late to the party, as discovered Zip Line Tbilisi just at the end of 2018, but seems it was first opened for a public already back in June 2017. It was during our latest trip to the Tbilisi Botanical garden when I noticed strange cables going from Narikala fortress into the botanical garden.

Visitors and locals of Georgia's capital Tbilisi can now enjoy the scenery of the city's popular botanical garden from a bird's eye perspective after a zip line running above the park was launched at the location earlier today.

Investment Goal #5 - $100,000 by the end of 2021 in Savings Account (Stocks, Cryptocurrencies, Peer to Peer Lending)

This article has been in my blog drafts section since January 2018. With the New Year fast approaching, I took another look on it, and despite the goal sounds a bit scary to me now, I decided that January 1st, 2019 is a great day to publish it. As they say, there is no better date to make a wish. Here you go - my New Years resolution - a plan for the next three years.

I'm 33 now, and I have a goal to have in saving account a million dollars by the time I will turn 60, in 2045. I started my wealth building journey just two years ago in 2017, and by now I've managed to save ~ $20,000. On average that's about $10,000 a year.

To make it to $100K in the next 3 years, it would ask me to save $80,000 or about $26K a year. With my current savings rate, I could barely reach $50K by the end of 2021.

Now, that's why I decided to boost my goal (Which is just a small step from the bigger goal) - frankly speaking, from today's perspective, looking - I have not a single clue, how to double my savings rate on a yearly basis. 

On the other hand, there are a couple of options I'm considering now - like earning more (still just around $20K a year) + investing in value growth stocks and cryptocurrencies.

Take a look at my previous investment goals:

• Investment Goal #1 - $100/mo from Dividend Payments
• Investment Goal #2 - Trade Bitcoin from 0.033 to 0.05 (Altcoin Flipping)
• Investment Goal #3 - Build up Starter Emergency Fund $1,000
• Investment Goal #4 - Minimum $550 Purchase for US Stocks

Now, I have said it load, no way back. $100,000 in savings account by the end of 2021. I will be then 36/37 years old. For a guy in his late thirties that amount of money sounds reasonable to have.

The Botanical Garden of the University of Latvia

The Botanical Garden of the University of Latvia is located in Pardaugava (Kandavas 2), just a 10-minute ride from the central part of Riga. The garden was founded in 1922.

Over 15ha visitors can explore hothouses and outdoor collections with some 6,000 different plants. It is one of the most well-loved recreational spaces in Riga - you can slowly walk the garden’s compact yet informationally saturated territory, get to know plants from all over the world, visit the Plants House, the Azalea House as well as the Tropical House, or just enjoy lush nature in the middle of the city.

Whether you are a gardening enthusiast, a botanical expert, or just want to spend time in a beautiful and pleasant environment, you will always find something interesting here.

I first visited Riga Botanical garden in March 2018. I haven't seen many botanical gardens, but this one really reminded the one you can find in Kiev, Ukraine (Hryshko National Botanical Garden in Kiev)

The garden’s collection is wide and carefully chosen - it includes protected plants, or those used for medical treatment, as well as a collection of the poisonous plants of Latvia.

Most of the trees and bushes in the arboretum are uncommon for Latvian flora; for example, the witch hazel, cedar, walnut tree, ginkgo tree, mulberries, roses, cork tree and an edible chestnut tree. The garden has a rich collection of perennial plants, dahlias and other decorative plants. A special collection provides an insight into the world of swamp plants as well as different kinds of moss and lichen. The Plant House has various kinds of tropical and subtropical plants as well as different dessert plants, including cactus.

From February to April, azaleas in the hothouse; in spring, the magnificent magnolias; at the beginning of summer, banks of rhododendrons; in the heat of the summer, roses and peonies and in autumn, dahlias.

Weekend Trip To Kiev, Ukraine

Weekend trip to Kyiv, Ukraine is a short recap of my 32 birthday celebrations back in 2017.

In short, we booked a central hotel in the city center, used local taxi's a lot, traveled forth and back to the distant neighborhoods, and tried a lot of great Ukrainian cuisine.

Traditions should be respected. For the fourth year in a row, I have been celebrating my birthday at one of the former Soviet Union member country's capital cities. It all started in Yerevan, continued in Tallinn, Vilnius and now it was the turn for Kyiv.

Puzata Hata is a popular (and probably the largest) chain in Kiev - it serves traditional Ukrainian cuisine for a budget price.

The Puzata Khata Restaurant Network opened its doors to the first visitors in 2003. Then it was the first restaurant in Bessarabka, in the center of Kiev.

I doubt we spent even USD 10 here for two person meal. Highly recommend!
