The Northern Forts of Liepaja

If you just like me are into fortification systems you will definitely enjoy The Northern Forts of Liepaja.

Built by Imperial Russia at the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of 20th century to provide the protection of Liepāja’s naval base in case of enemy attack. According to history - In November of 1908, Tsar Nicholas II approved a decision to shut down the sea fortress in Liepāja. It has been now over 100 years since these fortification walls don't function anymore and just recently they have been placed on tourist maps.

Livonian Order Castle Ruins at Aizpute

I have always been into a digging stuff and walking around old ancient sites is just one of my favorite activities to do. Also I'm into a history. So it's no surprise I visited a site called Livonian Order Castle Ruins at Aizpute.

If you are not familiar with what a Livonian Order actually is - in short: The Livonian Order was an autonomous branch of the Teutonic Order and a member of the Livonian Confederation from 1435 to 1561. If you are up to for a longer version, please read this article on Wikipedia: Livonian Order

Meanwhile, please enjoy some photos I captured here:

Aizpute Saint John’s church

The Saint John evangelic Lutheran church in Aizpute is one of the oldest churches in Courland, historical region of Latvia.  On a rainy day I took my DSLR camera and headed to Aizpute Church mound to photograph this ancient site. Latter I was surprised to learn that on this place, prior a church were built was an ancient Curonian castle.

Kazdanga Mill lake (Dzirnezers, Dzirnavu ezers in Latvian) and its surroundings is lovely I would even say a touristic place in a small Latvian village of Kazdanga.Someone (perhaps you) will find a lot of outdoor activities to do here - starting boat ride on that lake ending cycling around this area, I learned that you can even smoke a fish here (didn't try)Located in a very close distance to the impressive Kazdanga manor Kazdanga Mill Lake and its surroundings is a must-have attraction while you are in Kazdanga. The mill was built in 1840, it has been completely rebuilt and only the external façade provides a small insight into the times, while the mill dam is very well preserved…

Kazdanga Manor

Kazdanga manor is located in Courland historical region of  Latvia. As I have already stated back when visited Snēpele manor -  Latvia is a land of old manor houses and palaces, they dates back from the times when German nobles ruled this territory. A lot of manors one (perhaps you) can find in a historical region of Courland. As usual, I took my camera and headed here to photograph this manor.Old tree alley and cobbleI spent a few minutes on this cobble playing with my gorilla pad and my cameras aperture settings, and in fact, I really enjoy this image.Kazdanga manorI did find some similarities in this image with Chateau Mukhrani back in Georgia. Valtaiķi Evangelical Lutheran Church

When I was back in Germany and visited Germany's most visited landmark - The Cologne's Cathedral my travel mate said to me - it (Cologne's Cathedral) doesn't impress me as much as Valtaiķi church in Latvia. I looked at her - and asked, what? Seriously? Yes, she replied - the stained glass at Valtaiķi church are more impressive than here at Cologne.

I was left with no options and decided to visit this church by my own. Unfortunately, as usual in Latvia, this church was closed and I hadn't any chance to see those stained glass in close, but by reading this church's history (see bellow) I did find that it's one of the best of it's kind in Latvia at least.

Restaurant 'Kūriņš' In Jūrmala, Latvia

Restaurant Kūriņš in Jūrmala serves a traditional Latvian cuisine. It's located close to the seashore in Kauguri (part of Jūrmala). Rumour has it - in weekends it's hard to get a table here. The reason probably is a great food, large portions and a lovely location.aSignboard at Restaurant KūriņšLatvians are really into a carving, and Restaurant Kūriņš is no exception when speaking of wood and wood carving. Road to the sea from this RestaurantWorking hours for restaurant Kūriņš in JūrmalaAs said on this table - Restaurant is open every day from 12 to 23 (12 PM - 11 PM)Interior at Kūriņš restaurantMenu at Restaurant KūriņšWhen visiting a traditional Latvian cuisine you should expect a…

Zur Morschbach Hotel Review in Altlay, Germany

I booked this hotel in Altlay because of it's close location to Frankfurt-Hahn airport, cheap price and free parking.  I had like only 10 minutes for hotel research back in the Linden town. I was hoping to use hotwire for selecting a fine hotel near airport area, but unfortunately hotwire this time didn't served any hotel in a reasonable distance here. So my next move was booking.com. I didn't paid much attention of overall hotel interior as I already said - location, parking and cheap price was my main criteria. Zur Morschbach qualified for all my criteria. So we packed our belongings and headed here using our navi system. Didn't see anything much during our drive (it was night…

I was hoping to make here some good photos but unfortunately I'm not very satisfied with result I got it was a rainy day and I didn't use any tripod. There is still plenty of room to improve my photographer skills. But since I do find this object a pretty magnificent - I just couldn't resist to add it to my blog.

Aachen Cathedral

As I already stated in my previous blog post about Gothic Aachen Town Hall (Rathaus) in Germany this was my first time in Aachen and I had little not to say no clue what to see here. After a lovely breakfast at Oebel Backerei we decided to spend a few more minutes in this German town of Aachen. Then we discovered Aachen's Town hall and then shortly we found this magnificent Cathedral.

Unfortunetly during our visit here, the church were closed because of church service was held. Anyway I decided to take a few images here, and you can see the result bellow:

Just like Aachen's Town hall this cathedral also is made in style of Gothic.

Gothic Aachen Town Hall (Rathaus) in Germany

After a lovely breakfast at Oebel Backerei we decided to spend a few more minutes in this German town of Aachen. We just started to walk on one of the narrow streets and found this Gothic Town Hall.Aachen Town hall in GermanyTourist Signs near Aachen Town HallAt this stage I had no clue that at this Gothic style building is actually located a Town HallInfo Table at Aachen Town HallSince I don't read German I have no clue what's actually written there. Frankfurt–Hahn Airport

Despite some people would recommend you avoiding Frankfurt-Hahn airport because of it's location and some would even call this place a barn somewhere in the middle of nowhere, my experience shows that Frankfurt-Hahn airport although is not centrally located is a pretty decent airport, with all the basic facilities traveller could need.We arrived here from Riga airport using low-cost air carrier Ryanair. Took a rental car from Hertz (pre-booked) and spent some days in both Germany and The Netherlands. I was impressed to learn that historically Frankfurt Hahn airport has been built as a military base for NATO needs, which latter were transformed into a civil airport. (Read more about it at the…

Breakfasts at 'Oebel Bäckerei' in Aachen, Germany

That's how I could in short describe how we discovered a lovely German bakery - Oebel Backerei in Aachen (Germany). After a negative experience last night back in small Dutch town-let of Kerkrade (during our stay at Golden Tulip hotel) we couldn't find any decent place to have a dinner (except McDonald's) in the morning we decided - hey let's go to Aachen, there will be some lovely German cafeteria, and indeed, shortly after arriving at Aachen (some 10 km South of Kerkrade) we found this lovely bakery Oebel BäckereiCoffee at Oebel BäckereiSandwich at Oebel BäckereiA Fake Amerikaner I found it funny when found there…

Hotel 'Golden Tulip Parkstad - Kerkrade- Heerlen - Aken' Review

Once in The Netherlands one (perhaps you) should stay at the Dutch brand hotel - Golden Tulip. OK, it's actually owned by a French investment group - Groupe de Louvre, but Duthc brand sound more interesting right? Tulips, Netherlands... Golden Tulip...Although this was not my first time staying overnight in Netherlands, it was my first time staying overnight at the Golden Tulip brand hotel. The location for this hotel was nothing fancy, just some small town let somewhere south in the Netherlands (close to the border of Germany). The reason we stayed exactly at this location is plain simple - We landed at Frankfurt Hanh Airport, took a rental car from Hertz and headed north to Keukenhof's…

Buying Tulip Bulbs near Keukenhof (The Netherlands)

If you are the person who loves to bring flower seeds or bulbs from your travels abroad then you might find interesting my experience buying flower bulbs and perennial near Keukenhof's Garden in Netherlands. At first I must admit I'm absolutely not a flower expert - I prefer photograph them, but as I learned at this nursery this topic is actually all about - it's never too late to learn. And maybe even I have a green fingers.I tried to buy here a tulip bulbs, but I was informed that it's not a good idea to plant a bulb in April (I paid a visit here at the end of April 2015), instead I should come back in October and then it's a good idea to plant a bulb. As I said - I'm…
