At the start of April 2026, during our roughly five-day trip to Berlin, we finally visited the famous Berlin Zoo for the first time - or at least the first time I can actually remember. There is a chance my mom might have taken me here sometime in the early 1990s, but if so, those memories are long gone. This visit felt completely new, and honestly, it turned out to be one of the highlights of our Berlin family trip.

Berlin offers countless museums, historical landmarks, and trendy neighborhoods, but if you are traveling with kids, the Berlin Zoological Garden (Zoologischer Garten Berlin) should absolutely be on your list.
Easy To Reach And Surprisingly Affordable
We took a Bolt taxi from our hotel directly to the zoo. The ride was quick and not expensive at all, especially considering Berlin’s size. Public transport in Berlin is excellent, but with a child and a full day ahead, the taxi option felt convenient.
Before arriving, we purchased the combined Zoo + Aquarium tickets online. The process was smooth, and the tickets were downloaded directly into my Apple Wallet, which made entry simple and hassle-free. We paid about EUR 25 per person for both attractions, which felt very reasonable considering how much there is to see.
For a major European capital city attraction, the pricing did not feel overpriced at all.
A Little History About Berlin Zoo
Berlin Zoo is actually the oldest zoo in Germany. It opened back in 1844 and has grown into one of the most famous zoological gardens in the world. Located in the Tiergarten district, right in central Berlin, the zoo survived wars, destruction, reconstruction, and political changes over nearly two centuries.
Today, Berlin Zoo is known for having one of the largest collections of animal species anywhere on the planet. It is home to thousands of animals representing hundreds of species from all around the world.
The zoo became especially internationally known thanks to its giant pandas, which remain one of the biggest attractions for visitors.
Tigers, Pandas, Penguins And More
The zoo itself is spacious, green, and very pleasant to walk through. Even in early April, the weather was comfortable enough for a long visit.
Among the animals we enjoyed most were:
- The giant pandas
- Tigers
- Penguins
- Hippopotamuses
- Elephants
- Various monkeys and primates
- Large birds and flamingos
The panda area was especially crowded, but understandably so. Seeing giant pandas in person always feels a bit special, no matter how many documentaries you have watched before.
The penguin section was another favorite for our daughter, who spent quite a while observing them and taking notes.
A Young Explorer With A Notebook
Our 7-year-old kid, as usual, was incredibly excited during the entire visit. She took lots of photos and filled pages of notes about animals, habitats, and random observations throughout the day. Traveling with children often changes the way you experience places — you notice more details because they notice everything.
Instead of rushing from one enclosure to another, we spent time discussing animals, reading information signs, and simply enjoying the atmosphere together.
Berlin Zoo turned out to be one of those places where both adults and children genuinely have a good time.
Cafeterias, Pretzels And Souvenirs
Inside the zoo there are several cafeterias and snack spots. During our visit, we stopped for pretzels, drinks, and a few snacks. Prices were acceptable for a tourist attraction, and the seating areas gave us a nice opportunity to rest between long walks.
There are also souvenir shops scattered around the zoo grounds. Naturally, we could not leave without buying at least a few animal-themed items for the kid.
Visiting The Aquarium
The combined ticket also included access to the Berlin Aquarium, located right next to the zoo entrance.
The aquarium visit added another dimension to the day. Besides fish and coral displays, there were reptiles, insects, amphibians, and various exotic creatures spread across multiple floors.

The jellyfish displays were especially impressive, while the crocodile and snake sections attracted large crowds of children.
The aquarium is not enormous by global standards, but together with the zoo it easily fills an entire day.
One Of The Best Places To Visit In Berlin With Kids
Berlin is often associated with history, politics, and nightlife, but for families, the city also has many excellent child-friendly attractions. Berlin Zoo definitely ranks among the best of them.
What makes it especially enjoyable is that the experience feels balanced:
- easy access,
- reasonable ticket prices,
- plenty of food options,
- good infrastructure,
- and enough attractions to keep children engaged for hours.
For us, it became one of the most memorable stops during our April 2026 Berlin trip.
And yes — it is absolutely a place we would gladly return to again.
