Average Salary in European Union 2018

For the fifth year in a row, I'm publishing my humble observations on average salary changes in the European Union. In this article, I've compared both gross and net average salary for 2018.

As in the case with minimum wages in the European Union 2018 article, for this year's average salary article, I was able to pull data both for gross and net minimum wage values across the European Union. 

I wouldn't call below written scientific research, as most of the data in this article are taken from Wikipedia's article List of European countries by average wage. To make it more interesting I've added a column for tax -  by having both values (gross and net) I did a simple calculation to see approximate tax rates in member states.

All calculations are done using Google Spreadsheets. Data provided below might not be 100% accurate but they should give an overall insight on average salary levels across European Union member countries.

The average salary in European Union 2018

The gap (in terms of net salary) between richest (Denmark) and poorest (Bulgaria) is 7.15. Which actually is shrinking, as in 2017 the gap between Denmark and Bulgaria was more than 7.6 times.

There is one thing that should be kept in mind, not all countries in this list have adopted EUR currency, in fact, there are 9 out of 28 countries in EU using their national currencies instead of EUR. ( Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Sweden and the United Kingdom)

Google AdWords/AdSense To Ban Cryptocurrency Related Ads

In June 2018, Google will update the Financial services policy to restrict the advertisement of Contracts for Difference, rolling spot forex, and financial spread betting. In addition, ads for the following will no longer be allowed to serve - Binary options and synonymous products, cryptocurrencies and related content (including but not limited to initial coin offerings, cryptocurrency exchanges, cryptocurrency wallets, and cryptocurrency trading advice)

Now, this update doesn't come as a surprise to me, and in fact, I was already waiting for it to happen sooner or later after Facebook announced to block all cryptocurrency related ads.

As a blogger covering crypto related stuff this new update will affect my blog directly, the thing I'm afraid of - the lost organic search traffic for crypto-related content.

To be on the safe side, starting today I have decided to limit future articles about crypto investments featured on the blog. 

Nasdaq Baltic Stock Market Biggest Gainers / Losers 2017

There was a 71 company listed on the Nasdaq Baltic stock market in 2017. In today's article, I decided to make a quick look on the biggest gainers and losers for a whole 2017. 

Baltic equities are listed on Nasdaq Baltics in 3 listings - Main List, Baltic secondary listing, and Firth North. As of writing this article the total market capitalization for companies listed under one of the three listings was EUR 7 billion and 261 million. 7 billion huh? Think that's huge? Think twice - the total market capitalization for cryptocurrencies right now is at 294 billion Eur, and we are in the bears market. The total market capitalization for Nasdaq Baltic's represents about 2.5% of the total market capitalization of cryptocurrencies.

Think I'm comparing apples to oranges? you are right, just for the correct illustration, the neighboring stock exchanges at Moscow have 515 billion market capitalization, Stockholm stock exchange EUR 1,02 trillion, Warsaw EUR 321 billion. Not to speak about London stock exchange with EUR 6.82 trillion or New York stock exchange with  EUR 17.31 trillion.

You got the picture. Well does it means if Baltic Stock exchange is so tiny if compared to the giants, it's not worth to give it a try? Not at all! If you decided to invest in all 71 Nasdaq Baltic listed companies (let's say 1000 EUR in each) at the start of January 2017, you would close the year with 24.34% value growth (not counting in dividends). 

The whole Nasdaq Baltic market beat the S&P 500 which closed 2017 with +21.14% (2017 S&P 500 Return) and came close with Dow Jones Industrial +24.39 (2017 Dow Jones Industrial Average Return)

In 2017 there were 42 companies listed on Nasdaq Balti paying dividends. Some were so generous that paid about 30% in dividends in 2017.

In case you invested EUR 1,000 in each of the companies listed on the Nasdaq Baltics you would end the year with  €88,279.26 or + €17,279.26, also you would receive dividend income of about €2,986.30, giving the total value of €20,265.56. How cool is that? That's awesome.

Speaking of me - currently, I own shares of 16 great dividend-paying companies in the Baltic's. I'm far from affording to invest EUR 1,000 in each of the companies listed on the Nasdaq Baltic's, instead, I'm focusing on large-cap high dividend paying companies. I was able to pull 5.47% dividend yield (on cost) in 2017. I'm looking at similar results for 2018 as well. 

Companies I own shares in, according to the above-listed table are both among the top gainers and biggest losers.

Cryptocurrencies are Volatile - Here is How I Lost $1,000 in Value in a couple of days

Wow, what a bearish ride for the past couple of days in the cryptocurrency world. Bitcoin and all the other major altcoins have lost value on average by 25% in the past couple of days. From trading BTC at $11,615 on March 5th down to $8,606 on March 9th. 

Long story short - I've been investing in cryptos since the second part of 2017. Before actually investing in cryptocurrencies I developed the so-called dollar cost averaging plan, and decided to buy the major cryptocurrencies once in the month no matter the price. Dollar cost averaging helps to exclude emotional decisions. My plan is to acquire more coins until the end of 2020. That's roughly 2 years and 9 months to go.

Currently, I own following cryptocurrencies - bitcoin, ethereum, litcoin, ripple, bitcoin cash and siacoin. Bitcoin cash and Siacoin I've added to my crypto portfolio with the start of 2018. Here is how my dollar cost averaging chart looks now:

Despite a massive crash with 25% wiped in value in matters of a couple of days, I'm still in a positive side, with about +76% value growth, thanks to the dollar cost averaging. 

Now as cryptocurrencies are volatile, there are two possible scenarios I currently consider for my crypto portfolio - first, there is a great chance buying the dips and hopping for value appreciation in the future, which means keep sticking with the plan and buying coins once in the month no matter the price.

Second, as being a reasonable investor I understand I should skim the profits once in the while, and as I can't predict what will be the price for cryptocurrencies at the end of 2020, I have decided to sell some part of the portfolio at all time highs. The last time my portfolio experienced an all-time high value was back in the December 2017, reaching jaw-dropping 340%.

The current all-time high I'm looking to sell some part of the portfolio is set at following rates:

• bitcoin: $14,719.74
• ethereum: $1,104.47
• litcoin: $242.53
• ripple: $2.36

These are historically the highest prices my portfolio has experienced in the past.

Here is how my portfolio would look like if the prices were such as of today:

Now, this is some EUR 3,000 difference. As my crypto portfolio is not considered huge, I would most probably sell of just 10% from each coin reaching historical all-time high.

The question remains - what should I do with cash earned from such sell-offs. Again I can see two possible scenarios - either to leave it on investor account on Coinbase and wait for the next dip to buy back more coins or take off this money and invest in stocks or peer to peer lending.Time will show, but right now let's see what amount we are talking about, considering a 10% sell-off at all time high prices:

• bitcoin: $156.65
• ethereum: $158.18
• litcoin: $174.09
• ripple: $252.94

Total: $741.86

Currently selling of 10% of my portfolio would give me about $400, hoping to reach previous all-time high levels and selling then 10% would almost double the value.

Now there is no guarantee that all crypto coins will reach the previous all-time high levels, but I'm pretty bullish on this.

For this years article, I was able to pull data both for gross and net minimum wage values across the European Union.

It should be noted: The calculations are based on the assumption of a 40-hour working week and a 52-week year, with the exceptions of France (35 hours), Belgium (38 hours), United Kingdom (38.1 hours), Ireland (39 hours), and Germany (39.1 hours). Most of the minimum wages are fixed at a monthly rate, but there are countries where the minimum wage is fixed at an hourly rate or weekly rate.

As it already happened for the previous years, there are no changes in the country with highest and lowest minimum wage. Luxembourg as usual ranks #1 with almost EUR 2,000 gross minimum wage in 2018, while Bulgaria ranks last with just EUR 261.00. Making a gap between highest and lowest salary in European Union 7.62 times. That's huge, but shrinking (for 2017, the gap was 8.48 times)

In 2018, there are already three former Communist block countries (Slovenia, Poland, and Estonia) with gross minimum wage set at EUR 500 or higher.

Southern European countries Spain, Greece, and Portugal fall into brackets > EUR 500 and < EUR 1,000 minimum wage in 2018. 

The, so called, Western countries - Benelux countries, Germany, France and UK have the highest government set gross minimum wage and are pretty similar.

Last, but not least, by having both values (gross and net) I did a simple calculation to see approximate tax rates in member states.

Now, some interesting data here, it turns out the highest tax rates for minimum wages across the European Union are set in Romania (38.63%), Hungary (33.48%), Poland (29.82%), Latvia (26.98%) and Germany (26.44%)

Most progressive countries are Ireland (3.47%), Estonia (3.60%), France (7.51%), Netherlands (9.38%) and Lithuania (9.75%)

Ahh, I love these lovely roadside cafeterias which are hard to locate, after visiting and leaving, on the map. This time I was lucky enough and turned out I had pictured the name of this place in Greek. A bit patience and usage of Greek language transliteration and here you go - found both the name and location of this place, meet Palios Mylos Restaurant near Argiroupoli Springs, Crete.

Visited back in June 2017. Now it's hard to recall exact our route back then, but most probably we arrived here somewhere from Triopetra area. 

The restaurant is located next to the Argiroupoli Springs some 27 km southwest of Rethymnon on the slopes of the Psilotitis mountain with its many springs of crystal clear water and the remains of the ancient city of Lappas

February 2018 Dividend Income Report - $62.89

Time flies and so did last February disappeared like a flicker. Now it's time to look back and see how did it go for me in terms of dividend income.

February marks already the tenth (#10) dividend income report, covering earnings I've made from dividend-paying stocks, peer to peer lending (both fiat and cryptocurrencies)

Surprisingly, but February turned out much better than I thought before - after a few e-mail and support tickets forth and back with bank and fund I was looking to have in my portfolio since August 2017,  I finally managed to add this fund to my portfolio. The fund dividends helped to boost a little bit dividend income in February, and I was able to generate  $62.89 income in a very passive way.  Hopefully, this fund will contribute also in May, August, and November. 

I'm speaking about Baltic Horizon Fund - and there is one bold reason I like this fund, quarterly dividend payments (at least in 2017, and hopefully in 2018), the yield is around 7-9%, which is among the highest yields in the Nasdaq Baltics, on the other hand ,Baltic Horizon Fund is kind of like the first REIT in the Baltic's and shouldn't be viewed as a dividend stock. But I will. Because that's what it's doing - paying a fat 7-9% yield (or at least that's what the fund did in the past).

As usual, I was doing nothing much, just investing in great companies, playing a little bit with cryptocurrencies and lending out money via peer to peer marketplace. Most of the February was on autopilot, just at the start of the month I deposited some chunk of money to Mintos.com peer to peer lending marketplace, bought Silvano Fashion Group, OlainFarm and Baltic Horizon Fund stocks at Nasdaq Baltics.

Additionally I continued to experiment with cryptocurrency mining, with my custom built ethereum mining rig, and investing in Hashflare.io cloud mining contracts, but for right now these mining operations don't fits in my philosophy of a true passive income, I'm not planning to add earnings made in crypto mining to these monthly dividend income reports. On the other hand, in February cryptocurrency mining operations made me about $4.35 daily if combined and I want more, way more.

The fun fact is - the YoY growth rate for my dividend income in February is more than 15,000%. A year ago I just started my way to the financial freedom and laid first bricks with Mintos.com peer to peer lending. Unfortunately, my first month with Mintos.com was with a negative -0.42$ sign (because of the service charges on the platform)

Now, a year later I have greatly increased my investments on Mintos.com peer to peer lending marketplace, have added one ETF from the Baltics and of course some humble earning from crypto lendings on Poloniex.co

Monthly income to the date

My portfolio is now more than one year old. As I was just starting out last year, the first months of the year didn't generate me much. Just starting with March, April and May the journey started to roll.

The cumulative earnings for 2018 are $163.84 which is about 13.6% of my goal for 2018 ($1200).

On the average, I should pull about $103 each month for the next 10 months to reach this goal. Right now it seems I'm on the right track, as there are already a few months in 2018 I'm looking on close to $150/mo and in fact will try to crack $200/mo milestone this year.

About investments and return 2018

Since the begging of the year, I've additionally invested $3,192.53 what is about 29.84% of the total $10,700.18 planned investments in 2018. Also, I've reached 1.78% in value for my planned 1 million dollar savings account by 2045.

On the average, I should invest about $750.77/mo until the end of the year to reach my goals. 

YTD value for the entire portfolio at the end of February is down by - 8,54% but still positive since the begging in 2017 with a positive 16.15% value growth.

February was pretty stable at YTD growth rates. Crypto's seems have stabilized for a while after a more than 28% drop at the beginning of the year, and in fact, I'm looking on some bull trend in cryptos for the next couple of months.

As you can see from the graph above cryptos (26.4%) now is the second largest position in the portfolio after stocks (44.8%), followed by Mintos.com peer to peer lending (25.5%).

I'm lacking cash reserves (0.3%) in the portfolio, to change that starting March 2018 I decided to run a 52-week money saving challenge and looking to increase cash reserves to about 5% from the portfolio value by the end of the challenge.

The challenge is simple - to deposit in the first week one euro, in the second week - two, third week - three, etc. The amount after each week continues to grow, up to the last week of the year, when it is 52 euros.

Also, I started to build up an emergency starter fund with $1,000 and hope to reach this target by the end of the year. By the end of February, I've reached about 7.3% from this goal. My current emergency starter fund is in value about 0.41% of the net worth. From the downside, I should add - that with current emergency fund I could sustain the comfort of our family living just for one day. With reaching $1,000 it could sustain about 2 weeks. Yikes. But better have one

Goals forecasts for February 2019

This is my favorite part of the reports - trying to forecast/set goals for the next year. Despite I made more than 15,000% growth this year I'm more humble when looking on next year. It would be cool to reach $100/mo a year after. From today's perspective speaking that would mean to increase investments on Mintos.com peer to peer lending and buy additional Baltic Horizon Fund shares and still I might be short. I hope to start buying US stocks closer the end of 2018, and if, then hopefully US stocks will help me to achieve $100 goal for February 2019.

52 Week Money Saving Challenge

I first heard about such challenge from SEB Latvia bank - How to save 1,400 euros per year?

The recommendation is simple - to deposit in the first week one euro, in the second week - two, third week - three, etc. The amount after each week continues to grow, up to the last week of the year, when it is 52 euros.

As I love challenges and believe they are the great way to master new skills and make good habits, and in fact, there have been a few long-term challenges already passed in the frames of this blog, like - blogging 365 days in a row or daily photo challenge for 365 days. Not to speak about ongoing Road To Million dollars challenge. I decided to opt-in for a 52 weeks money saving challenge as well

Now, I might be late to the party, as it already starts of the March and I kind of already have defined my financial plans for 2018, see 2017 in Review and Financial Goals for 2018, there is still one reason I'm taking this challenge - lack of the cash in my portfolio.

Let me explain - I invest heavily all of the free money in stocks, funds, peer to peer lending and crazy crypto. Despite I know it's great to have cash position in the portfolio I always lack cash, as it's already invested. I have an idea to have at least 5% in cash in the portfolio.

Currently, cash takes the least amount of the portfolio, just 0.3% or EUR 40.63. That's ridiculously low. And I want to change it. 

Here comes in 52-week money saving challenge. 

It's hard to predict what will be the total value for my investment portfolio in March 2019, but if sticking with the plan to invest additional ~8,000 USD this year and taking into consideration historical performance. The value of this portfolio could be around ~ 25,000 euros. If I will succeed with this 52-week money saving challenge and will save up ~ EUR 1,400. That could mean I would have cash at about 5.6%, which is awesome.

Blog Income: 104% Increase YoY in Google AdSense Revenue 2018

Learn how I increased revenue from Google AdSense by 104% Year over Year and how you could too. 

For a prelude: I have been using Google AdSense for already eight and a half years by now, from whom first four and a half years have generated a really modest sum of EUR 100 from couple of low traffic and let's be totally honest - thin content websites (I had installed AdSense ad units on dozens of sites). I started using Google AdSense to monetize my websites back in 2009.

Today by accessing Google AdSense reports  (02/26/2018) I noticed that my lifetime revenue from this channel has reached EUR 2,704.25 for a time period Sep 4, 2009 - Feb 26, 2018. It is for eight and a half years. Nothing much, right?  About EUR 318 per year (that's less than a euro per day), on the other hand, the real increase has started from 2014. In fact, half of the money I made just in the last 365 days.

If compared year over year, during the past year, it has been a whopping 104% increase. 

There was a time when I took a pause from any attempts to build new or maintain existing low-value websites for about two years (2012-2013), as they just didn't generate income at all, but took way more time and efforts to maintain them.

At the end of 2013 (October)I decided to start fresh (after my second Summer long trip to the US I had a feeling I need to launch a blog to share my travel notes, ideas, findings e.t.c.) - and launched this blog (you currently are reading it).

For the first three months I didn't installed any ad units here, but at the start of the New Year of 2014 ad units were back. In my first month of monetizing this blog I earned whooping eight dollars, and I already felt I'm on the right track. Right now, four years later, earnings from Google AdSense are still relatively low, making about EUR 3-4 per day. I still see a great potential here to grow. Slow but grow. Drop after a drop. 

So, where is the magic?

There is no magic (at least for me) - not a black/white hat SEO, just a continuously everyday blogging for more than three years already. I'm not doing keyword research, and not using any other third-party tools to check competitor or whatsoever data. I'm just blogging, and the traffic is rolling in and earnings from Google AdSense are increasing year after year. I'm blogging on many different topics, most of the articles published on this blog probably aren't earning a dime, while some are performing very good. Yup, I understand a little keyword research wouldn't do any harm and might probably help me to double revenue from Google AdSense, but I'm still not focusing on technical details, instead of on content.
