Enzo’s Ezo Italian Restaurant in Kakheti

Discover chef Enzo’s Italian yard  with a positive vibe and happy atmosphere in the center of Chateau Mere hotel, close to Telavi

It's said that the place serves home-made simple rustic Italian food and 36 hours of rising dough pizza.

We had a chance to dine here at the start of October 2020, ordered some quattro formaggi pizza, salads, pasta carbonara, some drinks. Food was good, bill was about GEL 100

Overall - nice place.

Golden hour at Northern Forts / Liepāja

| | 17 seen

Northern forts of Liepāja are really cool military history tourism site - Built by Imperial Russia at the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of 20th century to provide the protection of Liepāja’s naval base in case of enemy attack.

It was at the start of November 2020, I was equiped with DJI Mavic Air 2 drone and wanted to make some cool drone footage. Decided to test with bracketing to post process in Adobe Lightroom later and make some nice looking HDR's.

Here is what I got:

Northern forts of Liepāja

According to history - In November of 1908, Tsar Nicholas II approved a decision to shut down the sea fortress in Liepāja. It has been now over 100 years since these fortification walls don't function anymore and just recently they have been placed on tourist maps.

Golden hour at Northern forts of Liepāja

There was an attempt to blow up the gun batteries, the underground structures, and the gunpowder depots but this did not prove effective. So nowadays we can still see the remains of the newest and the most up-to-date fortress of the Tsar’s Russia.

Weekend trip to Borjomi and Akhaltsikhe

| Tourism objects | 5 seen

Weekend trips to Borjomi and Akhaltsikhe are quite possible and easily doable.

I just love to visit Borjomi an area during the fall season, the scenery can turn very spectacular, leaves are turning yellow, orange.. see Autumn in Borjomi

So did happen at the of September 2020, we decided to for an easy weekend trip to Borjomi, booked a nice family-run hotel in Borjomi - hotel Rustaveli

Once arrived on site, it turned out we are the only guests, got complimentary wine from the hotel owner David, who latter recommended us to visit Sapara monastery near Akhaltsikhe the next day.

The next morning we headed to the famous mineral water park in Borjomi, as it was raining we decided to get back to the car and drive up to the women's monastery.

Next, our road took us to Akhaltsikhe, during our ride, we discovered a pretty awesome Atskuri monastery. Next, stop at Rabati complex, but before that ordered some grilled meat for takeaway at Sergos Duqani.

About an hour at the monastery complex and we wanted already to return back to Tbilisi, but as our grilled meat was not yet ready yet, took some short driving toward the town of Vale.

Made a lot of drone photography and videography

St Nicholas Naval Cathedral, Karosta / Liepāja

| Churches and Monasteries | 31 seen

The St Nicholas Naval Cathedral is a Russian Orthodox cathedral church located in Karosta in the north of Liepāja, Latvia.

I have visited this cathedral just a couple of times, but always have been impressed by the glory of the place.

It was at the start of November 2020, I got my new DJI Mavic Air 2 drone and I wanted to make some nice aerography, as we happened to be in the area, it was agreed to film and photograph this cathedral

St Nicholas Naval Cathedral in Liepāja

The cathedral was built on the style of 17th century traditional Russian churches with a central dome representing Christ with 4 smaller domes representing the four evangelists on designs made by V. Kosyakov. It was built to serve as the cathedral church of the Russian navy stationed in Karosta. The cornerstone was laid in the presence of a number of dignitaries including Tsar Nicholas II of Russia. The cathedral was completed two years later in 1903 and was formally consecrated and dedicated to the patron saint of seafarers in the presence of the Tsar himself.

St Nicholas Naval Cathedral in Karosta

The cathedral's belongings, including bells and icons, were transported to Russia during the outbreak of WWI, for safe keeping. After independence in 1918, the church was converted into a Lutheran church to serve the Latvian navy personnel.

St Nicholas Naval Cathedral in Karosta

The cathedral continued to function as place of worship until the Soviet re-occupation of Latvia in 1944. The soviets prohibited anyone entering the Karosta area which was turned into a secret soviet navy territory. Consequently, the cathedral was converted into a gymnasium, a cinema and a recreation and entertainment room, referred to as the 'red corner' for the needs of sailors and soldiers. The interior of the central dome was closed to eliminate the Acoustics which made it difficult for navy personnel to hear movies in the cinema

After Latvia's independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, the cathedral was given back to the Latvian Orthodox Church under the authority of the Russian Orthodox Church with the first service taking place that same year in December.

Rudbārži Palace

| Tourism objects | 20 seen

Rudbārži Palace is a palace in Rudbārži parish in Skrunda municipality in the historical region of Courland, in western Latvia.

The estate was, from 16th century to 1661, owned by the family of Eberhard von Goes  and from 1778 till 1920 by the von Fircks noble family.  Schloss Rudbahren was originally built (within the Courland Governorate) in 1835 for Baroness Thea von Fircks and was remodeled in 1882–1883. The structure was severely damaged by a fire set by revolutionaries in 1905 but rebuilding began in 1908.

Rudbarzi palace

During the Latvian independence struggle of 1919, Rudbārži Palace was a base for the Oskars Kalpaks Battalion (the 1st Latvian Independent Battalion). The bodies of Kalpaks himself and other officers who fell in the actions of March 1919 against the Bolsheviks were brought from the place of skirmish to lie in the Hall. In 1937 a rest home for Latvian soldiers was established there,[4] and a commemorative plaque was unveiled on the building. Following further destruction in 1938, there was a second reconstruction. During World War Two the palace served as a German field hospital, and was further damaged, and after the War it was used as a school for forestry workers.

From 1962 until 2017 the palace housed the Rudbārži Elementary School, which took on the name of the Oskars Kalpaks Elementary School. The commemorative plaque was rediscovered and remounted in its former position in recent years. The building has been granted state protection as a Cultural Monument for its association with Kalpaks: the domed oval hall has been restored at great expense and renamed the "Heroes' Hall".

The school closed owing to lack of pupils in 2017 and the house became a military centre for the New Guard

Rabati Fortress complex from a drone flight

| | 5 seen

Rabati Castle is a medieval fortress built in the 9th century under the name "Lomisa Castle" in the city of Akhaltsikhe in southern Georgia, recently globally reconstructed. One of the main attractions of the Samtskhe-Javakheti region along with Vardzia caves

We have been visiting Rabati occasionally here and then, so did happen at the end of September 2020, we were on a day trip to the Borjomi, when decided to come here, luckily I was equipped with my DJI Mavic mini drone and made a few nice drone photos.

Rabati fortress complex

In May 2011, the reconstruction of the Rabati fortress began, which was accompanied by the restoration and completion of many buildings that were destroyed in time immemorial. For this purpose, the Government of Georgia allocated 34 million lari from the state budget. As part of the project, the Akhmediye Mosque, the mosque minaret, the madrasah, the Jakeli castle, baths, the citadel, the walls of the fortress and the Orthodox Church were updated on the territory of the fortress. The tunnel leading to the Potskhovi River was also restored. As part of the project, two main streets of the fortress were repaired, a pavement was equipped, and the facades and roofs of buildings were restored.

Rabati fortress complex

According to the Georgian Chronicles the city was established in the 9th century by Guaram Mampal, son of the King of Tao. At the end of the 12th century Lomisa turned into a real city with the new name Akhal-tsikhe (New Fortress), which in addition to the fortress had a serious system of city-wide fortifications – high walls, guarded entrance gates and watch towers. From the 13th to the end of 14th centuries it was the capital city of Samtskhe-Saatabago, ruled by the Georgian princely (mtavari) family and a ruling dynasty of the Principality of Samtskhe, the House of Jaqeli.

October 2020 Dividend Income Report - $89.35

| Investments | 12 seen

Welcome to the forty-second (#42) dividend income report, covering earnings I've made from dividend-paying stocks and peer to peer lending in October 2020.

Last October we managed to get out of Georgia and come to Latvia, seems we have will stuck here for some time.

Also, another, bigger and better, drone is now in my arsenal (DJI Mavic Air 2)

Golden Autumn in Latvia / Forest house in Ķemeri

From the perspective of dividend income - we keep struggling and last October was pretty bad if compared to the previous years, we keep suffering from trimmed dividends, and by the end of the month, we barely took $89. Relying on dividends these days is very hard.

Compared to the previous October in 2019, when we took $200 in dividend income, our monthly dividend has decreased by -55.63%  (-$112.01). A year ago we did set a goal to take at least $300 this month, now this didn't happen.

Luckily, an additional $548.24 was made from options trading.

As options trading is not a passive form of making money while you are sleeping it wouldn't be fair to include them in dividend income reports.

Check out our options income report here: October 2020 Options Income Report - $548.24

If counted all together (dividends + options) it seems we have made $637.59 in total last month.

We were able to generate about 3.75% income yield from our portfolio value last October (that's about 45% annualized)

One of our monthly goals is to generate at least a 2.5% income yield from the portfolio. As longs it's above it - it's awesome.

Interest income in October 2020

From the stocks and peer to peer lending we got the following income last month:

Total EUR 76.37 / USD 89.35

In total there were 9 companies paying us dividend in October 2020 that is 5 company less than in October 2019

Monthly income

I've been tracking my journey towards million dollars in a savings account since January 2017. More than three years already. The result, so far, looks quite good. Dividends are growing (even when they are not)

Monthly dividend Income chart as of October 2020

The cumulative dividend income for 2020 now is $1,479.43  which is just 41.10% from my goal of 2020 ($3,600). On average, it would ask us to generate $1,060 every month for the next 2 months to reach this goal. Unattainable, as for now, I cannot see even a single $200 month for 2020,

2019 in Review and Financial Goals for 2020

Goals for October 2021

This is my favorite part of these reports - trying to forecast/set goals for the next year. But before setting a goal for 2020, let's see what I forecasted/said a year ago (October 2019)

when setting goals for October 2020, be more humble, that's why I will set a quite doable $300 goal for next year.

Ahh, what a surprise, we didn't get there, not even close. our dividend stock portfolio wasn't immune to the market downturn and most of our stocks get trimmed or halted dividend payments. In the case of recovery, there is hope.

I will be optimistic and say we are still looking to crack that $200/mo goal in October 2021

Sapara Monastery

| Churches and Monasteries | 8 seen

Sapara Monastery is a Georgian Orthodox monastery located in the Akhaltsikhe District of Samtskhe-Javakheti region, Georgia.

I had a chance to visit this monastery at the end of September 2020 and capture really awesome drone photography / catching colors of the fall

It has existed from at least the 9th century, and has numbered among its monks many important figures in Georgian ecclesiastical history. At the end of the 13th century Sapara became a possession of the Jakeli family, whose leader, Sargis Jakeli, was adept at staying on good terms with the Mongols, which enabled Samtskhe to enjoy a peace unusual for the time. When he grew old, Sargis took monastic orders and changed his name to Saba. His son Beka built the largest of the 12 churches here, St Saba's Church, named after the saint whose name his father had adopted, one of the most architecturally important churches of its time. The 14th-century frescoes inside are of high quality

From the end of the 16th century until the beginning of the 17th century the Sapara Monastery became empty due to the expansion of Ottoman Empire policy into Samtskhe and during this process the monastery's icons and other treasures were taken to more protected areas of Georgia

Set in a green forested canyon, the monastery is contrastingly distinguished by its pink and yellow stones. The ensemble is composed of church buildings and remnants of a palace and fortifications walls. The most important is the cross-in-square temple of St. Saba. Another significant church is St. Mary's Assumption Church.

The newly built road connecting Akhatsikhe to Sapara monastery

The road is very good and very spectacular, in total there is a distance of about 10km from the town of Akhaltsikhe.

Ķemeri Forest House

| Museums | 16 seen

Ķemeri Forest house is really cool outdoors tourism attraction located close to Jūrmala

The park centre is located in Ķemeri, in the “Forest House” . We first discovered this place back in Spring 2018 and made some nice hiking in the area, see: Hiking Trails in Kemeri National Park (Near Forest House)

We have been returning here for a few more times ever since.

Forest House in Ķemeri

The history of the “Tree House” dates back to the summer of 1933, when in the newly constructed building, a centre for sports and recreation (arch. Fridrihs Skujiņš) was opened, pleasing the visitors with “a exemplary shooting range, various American sport type apparatus, ping-pong, bowling alley, billiards, chess and bridge premises, good beer, delicious tea and coffee”.

Later the sport centre was changed into a restaurant “Fun mosquito”, which was operating up until World War II and offered fine meals for the resort guests, and the dinner entertainment included dancing and cabaret.

During the Soviet era, it hosted a children’s sanatorium. Now, it is the ĶNP administration and information centre, as well as Nature School organizing various events of nature education activities.
