How to Install Drupal 9 with Nginx, PHP-FPM 8.1, MySQL, phpMyAdmin on Ubuntu 22.04 - Linode Guide

In this article, you will learn how to set up a webserver for serving Drupal websites running with Nginx, PHP-FPM 8.1, MySQL, and phpMyAdmin on Ubuntu 22.04

For the following tutorial, I used very much the information from my previous guide with Ubuntu 18.04, but I decided to rewrite it for Ubuntu 22.04 version as it is shipped with php8.1 version and will work with Drupal 9 (most probably with previous versions too)

Prerequisites

Ubuntu 22.04
Root privileges.

You can get a cheap VPS starting just $5/mo from Linode. That's what I did - bought a new nanode from Linode

Literally, in a couple of seconds, the new server was up and running - that's what I love about sticking with Linode for years

I will use Terminal from MAC to access over SSH (Windows users could use Putty)

Secure your server

Create the user, replacing example_user with your desired username. You’ll then be asked to assign the user a password:

adduser example_user

Add the user to the sudo group so you’ll have administrative privileges:

adduser example_user sudo

Disallow root logins over SSH. This requires all SSH connections to be by non-root users. Once a limited user account is connected, administrative privileges are accessible either by using sudo or changing to a root shell using su -.

sudo nano /etc/ssh/sshd_config

Under # Authetification section change to

# Authentication: ... PermitRootLogin no

Update the Ubuntu system

sudo apt-get update

Install Nginx and PHP-FPM

Install Nginx with the following apt command:

sudo apt-get install nginx -y

Next, install php8.1-fpm with php-gd extension that is required by Drupal core:

sudo apt-get install php8.1-fpm php8.1-cli php8.1-gd php8.1-mysql php8.1-xml -y

Configure Nginx and PHP-FPM

In this step, we will configure Nginx to use php-fpm to serve HTTP requests for PHP pages. Go to the php-fpm directory "/etc/php/8.1/fpm" and edit the "php.ini" file:

sudo nano /etc/php/8.1/fpm/php.ini

Un-comment the cgi.fix_pathinfo line and change the value to "0"

When using nano command you can use CTRL+W to locate that line. Once changed press CTRL+O to save changes and CTRL+X to exit from nano editor

Now we should modify the default Nginx virtual host configuration. Edit the "default" file and enable the php-fpm directive.

sudo nano /etc/nginx/sites-available/default

Un-comment location ~ \.php$ section, so it look like this

location ~ \.php$ { include snippets/fastcgi-php.conf; # With php7.4-cgi alone: #fastcgi_pass 127.0.0.1:9000; # With php7.4-fpm: fastcgi_pass unix:/run/php/php7.4-fpm.sock; }

CTRL+O and CTRL+X

Then test the Nginx configuration with the command "nginx -t" to ensure that it is valid:

nginx -t

If there is no error, restart nginx and the php-fpm service:

systemctl restart nginx systemctl restart php8.1-fpm

PHP Info file (Optional)

Next, test that php-fpm is working properly with Nginx by creating new PHP info file in the web directory "/var/www/html"

cd /var/www/html/ echo "<?php phpinfo(); ?>" > info.php

Visit the info.php file at the server IP in a web browser.

Configure the VirtualHost for Drupal

We will install Drupal 9 in the directory "/srv/www/reinisfischer.com". Please replace my domain name in your installation with the domain name of the website that you want to use this Drupal installation for. So let's create the directory:

sudo mkdir -p /srv/www/reinisfischer.com/{public_html,logs} sudo usermod -a -G www-data admin sudo chown -R www-data:www-data /srv/www sudo chmod -R 775 /srv/www sudo nano /etc/nginx/sites-available/reinisfischer.com

Paste the Nginx configuration for Drupal 9:

CTRL+O and CTRL + X

The Drupal virtual host file has been created, now we have to activate it by creating a symlink to the file in the "sites-enabled" directory:

ln -s /etc/nginx/sites-available/0dtespxtrading.com /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/

Test the Nginx configuration and if there are no errors restart Nginx:

nginx -t systemctl restart nginx

Install MySQL

sudo apt-get install mysql-server sudo mysql_secure_installation

Warning: As of July 2022, an error will occur when you run the mysql_secure_installation script without some further configuration. The reason is that this script will attempt to set a password for the installation’s root MySQL account but, by default on Ubuntu installations, this account is not configured to connect using a password.

Prior to July 2022, this script would silently fail after attempting to set the root account password and continue on with the rest of the prompts. However, as of this writing, the script will return the following error after you enter and confirm a password:

... Failed! Error: SET PASSWORD has no significance for user 'root'@'localhost' as the authentication method used doesn't store authentication data in the MySQL server. Please consider using ALTER USER instead if you want to change authentication parameters. New password:

This will lead the script into a recursive loop which you can only get out of by closing your terminal window.

Because the mysql_secure_installation script performs a number of other actions that are useful for keeping your MySQL installation secure, it’s still recommended that you run it before you begin using MySQL to manage your data. To avoid entering this recursive loop, though, you’ll need to first adjust how your root MySQL user authenticates.

First, open up the MySQL prompt:

sudo mysql

Then run the following ALTER USER command to change the root user’s authentication method to one that uses a password. The following example changes the authentication method to mysql_native_password:

ALTER USER 'root'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED WITH mysql_native_password BY 'password';

After making this change, exit the MySQL prompt:

exit

Following that, you can run the mysql_secure_installation script without issue.

Install phpMyAdmin

sudo apt-get install phpmyadmin

Hit ESC when the installation prompts you for auto-configuration because there is no option for Nginx.

Make an easily accessible symlink

sudo ln -s /usr/share/phpmyadmin/ /srv/www/0dtespxtrading.com/public_html/phpmyadmin

Install and Configure Drupal

Enter the directory that we created earlier and download Drupal with wget. I'm using the latest Drupal 9.48. release as of December 2, 2022, make sure you are downloading the latest version by visiting the Drupal download page and writing down the last numbers (version)

cd /srv/www/reinisfischer.com sudo wget https://ftp.drupal.org/files/projects/drupal-9.4.8.tar.gz sudo tar -xvzf drupal-9.4.8.tar.gz sudo cp drupal-9.4.8/* public_html/ -R sudo chown www-data:www-data public_html -R

Now visit your Drupal site in the web Browser, you should see the similiar screen

Now, using phpmyadmin login into MySQL and setup database

Optional: How to edit hosts file on Mac

from the terminal

sudo nano /etc/hosts

add your IP adress pointing to the domain name to test before DNS zone get updated

November 2022 Blog Traffic And Income Report 21,650 Users / $ 398.52

Welcome to the #1 renewed blog traffic and income reports covering blog traffic and earnings/expenses for November 2022.

It has been already 7 years since my latest blog traffic and income report. As I enjoyed them back in 2014-2015, and because both the blog traffic and income have decreased significantly in the past year - I decided to renew these reports to get a better understanding of what's happening behind the scenes as they help me track my success or failures and hopefully can generate some ideas for you as well.

About Blog traffic in November 2022

Past November comes with a small but important - 3.96% traffic growth if compared to October, and resulted in 21,651 unique users visiting my blog.

But if compared YoY to November 2021 that is a -38.64% traffic drop. Back in the Summer of 2021, I did a major blog upgrade, upgrading it from Drupal 7 to Drupal 9 (as Drupal 7 become more and more obsolete) I believe the traffic drop is related to the blog upgrade as not all went smoothly like I had lost pictures, gmap module support and also AMP. I have managed semi-manually recover gmap and pictures, but haven't yet recovered AMP usability for the blog.

21,650 users is a - 3.96% growth if compared to the previous month
growth of +824 users
21,650 users in a month are about 721 daily users

For a blog that has had more than 120,000 monthly visitors in the past these numbers are very humble. I like the growth month on month, but for the next 12 months, I'm looking to grow the blog back to at least 50,000 monthly users. I believe it will take both good article writing, updating older ones, and fixing some technical things, like getting back AMP usability for the website.

Thoughts on December

I'm looking at the month of December pretty concerned - I mean the holiday season is in a full swing, but the last year for this blog has been challenging, with massive traffic drops - there could come a further drop in revenue. I will stick with a somehow high forecast for myself, but modest for more pro affiliate marketers - December should reach $500,00. Speaking of traffic - 25,000 users would be great to have at the end of December 2022.

How To Gain Access to Linode over Finnix SSH in Rescue Mode

In this article, I will keep some notes on how I accessed an "inaccessible" Linode over SSH using Rescue mode.

Brief background: More than 10 years ago (in 2012) I did set up a virtual server for XTRF translation management software, back then I choose freshly released Debian 6 (which reached its end of Life back in February 2016).

Back in the day, XTRF was not a big name, and most of the help support was done over some simple MS Word documents. I followed the tutorial and set and forget the server for years to come.

At the end of 2018, the server just stopped working - after several unsuccessful attempts to reanimate it I just gave up, as the newer and better versions of XTRF were released. We decided to continue with the newer version, and keep the old version in the backups, just in case someday we will need something out of it.

How To Install XTRF 8 on Ubuntu 18.04

Fast forward to the end of 2022 - and this day came - I was looking for ways how to minimize our monthly payment on Linode and noticed we have a few unactive instances for whom we are paying money, which we could not.

One such instance was the failed server and backup. Now I decided to remove it completely from our Linode list and save about $30/mo, but before that decided to copy locally all the files and folders (there still could be some important information, like some unpaid invoices e.t.c)

Unfortunately, I was not able to connect to the server over FTP or SSH, I was able to get in from the Linode Lish control, but not using WinSCP or Filezilla. I checked the ports - nothing, dead. The server running the translation management system was built on JBoss application, which most probably was messing around with ssh, FTP, and failing ports.

I spent a good afternoon and a morning to finally get it working, and the solution is quite simple, read the full guide here: Rescue and Rebuild

Connecting to a Linode Running in Rescue Mode
By default, Rescue Mode’s Finnix environment does not accept SSH connections. To access the Linode when it’s running in Rescue Mode, connect to it through the Lish console.

Set the root password for the Finnix rescue environment by entering the following command:

passwd

Enter the new password for the root user.

Start the SSH server:

service ssh start

You can now connect to the server as root with the SSH client on a local computer. You can also access mounted disks with an SFTP client:

Mounting Disks

Create a new directory for your disk:

mkdir -p /media/sda

Mount the disk to make its contents available at the /media/sda directory:

mount -o barrier=0 /dev/sda /media/sda

that's it, now you should be able to conenct to your Linode over ssh. Hope it helps!

Shaori Reservoir

Shaori Reservoir is an artificial lake located in the region of Racha, Georgia - some 170 km northwest of the capital Tbilisi.

I first visited it in mid-October 2022, during our first trip to Racha

The Shaori reservoir stretches from the southwest to the northeast, its length is 7.1 kilometers, the greatest width is 2.7 kilometers.

The greatest depth is 14.5 meters, the average depth is 9.8 meters, the area is 9.2 km². The volume of water is 90.6 million m³. It is fed by tributaries and precipitation that falls on its surface (1500 mm per year).

The banks of the reservoir are mostly low and steep, in some places they are flat.

I can see some great tourism potential here.

Sikvaruli Waterfall in Racha

The Sikvaruli waterfall (Waterfall of love) is located in Racha, near the town of Ambrolauri, Georgia

The waterfall flows on the mossy rocky massive and creates marvelous sight. Waterflow is located across the Rioni River.

We discovered this place by a chance - when our Rachan driver Levan, showed this place as one of the top sights around Ambrolauri.

Indeed the waterfall is quite impressive and looks double interesting because of the many colors around it - greed, red, blue. But it also depends on the season of the year. Fall is especially popular among Racha photographers.

The road literally ends at the waterfall, so you cannot pass it.

Spend some time at the waterfall before exploring other parts of Racha.

Won Another Online Auction - Plot of Land in Saldus (EUR 4.82/m2)

On November 24, 2022, I helped to win an online auction for a real estate property in Saldus, Latvia

This auction was held online at the E-izsoles platform. And unlike most of the other bids, this was one of the easiest bids, We were just two bidders, the second bidder had entered the bid a few days earlier and probably forgot to bid today, as my bid was just the second highest.

In total, we agreed to pay EUR 3,250 for a 668 sqm plot of land in Saldus. Distance to Riga is about 120km, Laidi 48km, Vilgāle 64km, and Jēči another 120km.

With this buy, we are having four properties in Latvia, all of which are located in the Kurzeme region. Back this summer we bought a little nice Summer house in Jēči (Liepāja)

Among Bolt couriers, bagels and overturned bowls of chips, I won a bid on a plot of land in Saldus. Purchase amount 4.86 EUR/m2 - cheaper than in the mountains of Georgia (most probably), but it seems much easier to realize. The free market says - that the price could be 4.5 - 9 EUR per sqm. Will see!

Unlike with our previous buys - I'm not looking to remodel or improve this plot of land - quite opposite, looking to sell at profit without investing a dime. My first guess is to list it for 10 EUR / per sqm to test the waters. If the buyer will come - let it go. If no buyers are showing up, keep it for a couple of years and sell when the market price reaches 15-20m2.

I did some research on property prices in Saldus city and nearby parishes, it seems that such a plot of land could cost between EUR 4.5 - EUR 9 /m2 in 2022. By paying EUr 4.86/m2 I believe we got a fair price

As usual, cant wait to fly a drone in this spot of land. But for now, it will take some 2 -3 month to finalize the deal, after which I hope to list property on local ss.lv website

How to buy Straddle Options on Crypto (Ethereum & Bitcoin)

Lately, I have been trading 1 DTE options with Ethereum on the Deribit platform. In the past, I have traded quite a lot of Bitcoin and Solana coins (until the November 2022 Crypto Crash)

Unlike stock options, trading crypto options might get more complicated, a lot more complicated and I wouldn't actually recommend them if you are a novice. My biggest learning curve so far has been the fact that crypto options are settled in crypto itself.

Anyhow, after a losing trade with a call ratio bacskpread I was looking for a "revenge" trade (something you should always avoid at all cost) and thought - what If instead of selling options premium I will actually buy one?

The thing is - As I don't have any clue which direction crypto will move in the next 24 hours I decided it would be advisable to buy a straddle - the same strike price for both calls and puts.

What is a Straddle

A straddle is a neutral options strategy that involves simultaneously buying both a put option and a call option for the underlying security with the same strike price and the same expiration date.

A trader will profit from a long straddle when the price of the security rises or falls from the strike price by an amount more than the total cost of the premium paid. The profit potential is virtually unlimited, so long as the price of the underlying security moves very sharply.

Example buying straddle options with Ethereum

On November 23, 2022, ETH was trading at $1,165

I decided to open straddle with a $1,150 price, and got filled at the following rates:

Buy 1 Nov 24, 2022 $1,150 put @ 0.01 ETH
Buy 1 Nov 24, 2022 $1,150 call @ 0.0235 ETH

Total premium paid: 0.0335 ETH / $39.02

What happens next?

On November 24 at the expiry Ethereum trades at $1,150 - our worst-case scenario - we lose the premium we paid

If ETH trades at $1,200 - we lose the premium we paid for the put option (0.01ETH) but gain on the call side $50, converted to crypto 0.0434 ETH (50/1150). We earn 0.0104 ETH / $12.48

In case ETH trades $1,100 we lose the premium paid for the call side (0.023) but gain on the put side $50, converted to crypto 0.0434 ETH (50/1150). We earn 0.0104 ETH / $11.44

Break-even: $1,100.98 and $1,189.02

Anything in between our break-even prices and we actually lose the premium paid.

Example buying straddle options with Bitcoin

On November 23, 2022 BTC was trading $16,520

I decided to open straddle with a $16,520 price, and got filled at the following rates:

Buy 0.1 Nov 24, 2022 $16,500 put @ 0.00105 BTC
Buy 0.1 Nov 24, 2022 $16,500 call @ 0.0012 BTC

Total premium paid: 0.00225 BTC / $41.30

What happens next?

On November 24 at the expiry Bitcoin trades at $16,500 - our worst-case scenario - we lose the premium we paid

If BTC trades at $17,000 we lose the premium we paid for the put option (0.00105 BTC) but gain on the call side $50 (0.1*500), converted to crypto 0.00303 BTC (500/16500/10). We earn 0.00078 BTC / $13.26

In case BTC trades $16,000 we lose the premium paid for the call side (0.0012 BC) but gain on the put side $50 (0.1*500), converted to crypto 0.00303 BTC (500/16500/10). We earn 0.00078 BTC / $12.48

Break-even: $16,089 and $16,910

Anything in between our break-even prices and we actually lose the premium paid.

Sakhluka Rachashi, Cozy Cabin in Racha / Agara

Sakhluka Rachashi cabin house is located in Agara in the Racha region of Georgia.

We booked this place on Airbnb for about a 2-night stay in mid-October 2022, during our Racha trip. In total, we paid about $300 for our stay here.

As this time we were traveling without a car, we arrived here from Sadmeli Winery near Ambroulauri, after a short trip around Racha, by a driver I hired in Ambrolauri.

We had a little nice cabin house, with two bedrooms, fake, but fun, little fireplace, nice garden, and best of it - garden oven. We grilled some fish and potatoes there.

I felt bit nostalgig, but also inspired for our canceled garden oven, see: Building a foundation for a garden oven - Part 1

Our stay here, was quite cozy, but bit cold. There was no TV, and the fake fireplace didn't warm us, as expected. We got heating grom AC and garden oven.

The chalet features 2 bedrooms, a kitchen with a fridge and a minibar, a washing machine and 1 bathroom with a hairdryer. Towels and bed linen are provided.

We enjoyed a lot our stay here. We found a local shop nearby to buy some goodies. Also found some ideas for our upcoing Summer cottage project.

On November 17, 2022, together with a partner from Canada, we secured our first co-investment in Georgia - a 47m2 apartment under construction in Tbilisi. Looking to put it on blockchain next. Exploring NFT.

Long story short, back in April 2022, while vacationing in Batumi, I come up with an idea - investing in booming Batumi real estate by attracting crypto investments. Original idea was to issue a crypto token, raise the funds, purchase the apartment under construction and sell it for profit once it is done.

A few months latter, Uday, co-investor from Canada contacted me, showing keen interest in this project, but in a more classical FIAT investment approach. I agreed.

Scouting Batumi real estate for the second time, at the end of September 2022 I was left a bit disappointed, the price seemed too high, and the apartments seemed too small... I started to explore what are our options in Tbilisi and was left surprised to find, there are apartments for sale for about $500 per square meter.

I contacted a few real estate developers in Tbilisi and narrowed down our potential investment to Eco City Samgori project in Tbilisi.

After my initial scouting, I went to the METI office, discussed with developers more details and we agreed to proceed with investment in a small 1-bedroom apartment with a balcony located on the 5th floor

The rest was about sending back and forward draft agreements, dealing with payment schedules, and negotiating better prices (in the end we have to pay $27,260 in the next 20 months). Most of the forth-and-back thing was done over Whatsapp and Email.

Our buying price with a 0% monthly installment is $574 per sqm

My investment in this project is 10%, while my partners are 90%. We have our mutual agreement that I will additionally get $2,000 once we will sell this apartment.

Today we sent the first funds to the METI developer to secure our spot. Total sent 1,938 GEL or about 2.6% of the total purchase price.

Looking to sell this apartment in the price range of $750 - $850 per sqm once it is finished (in 20 months). that would mean about $170 - $270 profit per square meter. $8,000- $12,500.

29% - 46% potential profit in about 20 months.

I would say the prospect looks quite good

While the project is still in the construction phase I have an idea to put it on the blockchain, minting an NTF, for example. That would ask for a better understanding of Georgian legal law. In general, as we are two co-owners now, I see we could make a smart contract for example.. more studies are required.

As this is our first investment, it guess there are a lot of known unknowns, we still have to discover, and also many unknown unknowns.

Nikortsminda Cathedral

Nikortsminda Cathedral is a Georgian Orthodox Church, located in Nikortsminda, Racha region of Georgia.

I first discovered this beautiful cathedral in mid-October 2022, during our first trip to the region of Racha.

It is said, that Nikortsminda was built in 1010–1014 during the reign of Bagrat III of Georgia and was repaired in 1534 by the King Bagrat III of Imereti. Three-storied bell tower next to the cathedral was built in the second half of the 19th century. Frescoes inside the cathedral date from the 17th century.

The cathedral is on the Tentative List for status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Stylistically, Nikortsminda reflects the Georgian cross-dome style of architecture, following a six-conch-within-rectangle plan. The rectangular western apse has adjoining side chapels.

Nikortsminda has a massive dome and unbroken arcatures as its twelve windows, which are decorated with ornamented architraves.

14 Things to Do in Latgale

In this article, I will share some notes and points of interest from our latest trip to Latgale at the start of August 2022. to celebrate my 37th birthday.

Our trip actually started a few days earlier on the other side of Latvia. Since this Summer we own a little summer house near Liepāja. Also, we have an apartment near Kuldīga, and back in that Summer, we had a flat in Riga. We started from Jēči with a stop at Pape, Vilgāle, and an overnight stay at our Apartment in Riga.

The next morning we left from Riga towards Latgale with a booked guesthouse in the evening near Varakļāni. There are several highways taking towards Latgale. We chose E22 highway, through Pļaviņas, Koknese, and Jēkapils.

One of our first stops in Latgale was the Quail Farm Olala in Koknese, we decided to include this place in our route as we have an acquaintance from the Georgia times somehow involved in this business. Next to the Quail Farm is located the impressive Koknese castle, which alone is already worth spending a few hours at. From Koknese we headed towards Varakļāni, with a stop in Jēkapbils. Spent about an hour at Jēkabpils LIDL store buying goodies for the next few days. Lidl was our favorite store in Latvia during the Summer of 2022.

Arriving in Varakļāni we wandered a bit around, found the interesting Varakļāni palace, and as it was already evening header for our guest house - Odumiņi where we had a lovely barbeque, sauna a good sleep.

The next morning I suggested we should go to Rezekne to have our morning coffee. Rēzekne from our guest house was about 40 km. Arriving in Rēzekne, we felt a bit disappointed as it was hard to locate a decent coffee place. In the end, we barely found a local Latgalian coffee house Kuup, which was awesome. Now we spent a few hours in Rēzekne, visiting Rēzekne Castle ruins and Rēzekne cathedral.

From Rēzekne, we headed towards Dagda. My great-father originally is from that part of Latvia. We headed to the village Andzeļi, where the impressive Lake Ežezers is located. Tried to swim. While in the area also visited Piloru oak grove and from here headed towards the jewel of Latgale, the Basilica of Aglona, but before that made a stop at Christ the King mount and had a very hearty dinner at Somersēta restaurant in Aglona.

After spending a good time at Aglona Basilica we headed to our next guest house, where we had booked a glamping stay in a tent next to the Vabole lake at Laimes taures. The hosts had prepared a delicious birthday meal and we finished the evening in a hot pool with beautiful views. In the morning, before departure took a boat ride among the swans.

Guest house Laimes taure was located just some 20 km from Daugavpils, we decided to make a quick at the second largest Latvian city, before returning back to Riga. In Daugavpils visited only Church hill Daugavpils and returned back to Riga via the P73 highway near the Lithuanian border (via Ilūkste, Subate, Aknīste, Nereta, Valle, Vecumnieki, Rīga)

OECD or The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development is an intergovernmental organization with 38 member countries, founded in 1961 to stimulate economic progress and world trade. ]

It is a forum and its members are countries that describe themselves as committed to democracy and the market economy, providing a platform to compare policy experiences, seek answers to common problems, identify good practices, and coordinate domestic and international policies of its members.

Also, sometimes called the club of the wealthiest countries, in this article I decided to pull up GDP per capita data for each of the countries and make some ranking.

The gap between the richest country in terms of GDP per capita Luxembourg and the lowest Colombia is quite impressive about 22 times.

Most of the countries with the highest GDP per capita are located in the so-called "Western countries" - European Union, US & Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea

Countries with lower GDP per capita are located in South and Central America (Chile, Colombia and Costa Rica), the Middle East and Eastern Europe (also members of the EU)

It will be interesting to observe how OECD will evolve, will we see first country from the African country joining the club. Also Russia, Brazil, China, India.
