Tbilisi Marathon 2023: My 10K Personal Best

On October 1, 2023, I ran the 10K at the Tbilisi Marathon and finished in 1 hour, 10 minutes and 1 second — a personal best for me at the time. The event was organized by HeidelbergCement Georgia, and the 2023 programme included a half marathon, a 10K and kids' races.

After our earlier Tbilisi Fun Run in spring, many of us from Caucasus Translations decided to take on another race together. Before this one, I had managed four 10K-focused sessions: three on a treadmill and one almost-9K trail run around Turtle Lake with a friend.

Race morning

Preparing for the Tbilisi Marathon start

The 7:00 start meant an early alarm. The course passed our street, Mikheil Tsinamdzgvrishvili Street, and we were not sure whether we would get through to the start. At 6:30 the street was still open, so we caught a taxi to Rustaveli Avenue in time.

My 1:10:01 personal best

I started with the slower runners, in the group aiming for more than an hour over 10K. My approach was simple: run a kilometre, then take about a minute walking slowly before getting going again. It was not elegant, but it worked better than I expected. At the finish, the 1:10:01 result was my personal best.

I have always enjoyed taking these small race-day photos. Our kiddo did both the kids' run and, together with mum, the 10K, which made it a proper family day rather than just a personal time trial.

Running with Caucasus Translations

I was running with the Caucasus Translations team and wearing a TerraMatris T-shirt. On that day, the fund's recorded value was $80.51; that is a dated 2023 note, kept here as part of the original story rather than a current financial update.

At the time, I hoped that one of the next 10Ks would come in under an hour. That goal took longer than expected, but this 2023 result was an important step.
