Built in 2016, Park Inn by Radisson Riga Valdemara invites its guests to stay on the western side of Daugava River with good connections to the Old Town, Riga International Airport and main sights. Guests can enjoy a meal at the onsite restaurant, enjoy views from terrace and exercise in the fitness centre.

We stayed at this hotel at the start of September 2017. By now I have an extensive list of Riga hotels, and I must admit that Park Hotel by Radisson, has been one of the pleasant stays so far in Riga.

Most of the rooms feature panoramic views of Daugava River and upper floors offer a city and Old Town overview.

Hofbrau Munchen Gudauri is a roadside cafeteria located in Georgia (some 20 km from Gudauri)

I'm not very well familiar with Hofbrau Munchen brand but seems this is a popular German brewery brand in Germany and abroad, the one located on Gudauri highway seems is not actually affiliated with the German brand (but you never know). See more: https://www.hofbraeu-muenchen.de/en

Anyhow, you can get here some German beer and some German cuisine (though when visited this place I opted for Georgian mcvadi and Georgian lemonades)

Tsalka

| Tourism objects | 34 seen

Tsalka is a town and municipality center in southern Georgia's Kvemo Kartli region located some 100 km from Tbilisi. Next to Tsalka is located the largest water reservoir in Georgia - Tsalka reservoir.

Town of Tsalka is known by many abandoned houses next to the lake, and in fact, while traveled here for the first time back in 2011, I had an idea it would be cool to buy a house here. My dream of owning a house in Tsalka died in January 2019. Why so? Scroll down for photos. lol

Tsalka reservoir is the largest artificial reservoir in Georgia, built in 1946, see Tsalka Lake / Water reservoir

From what I've heard from the locals, during the Soviet era, the so-called Caucasus Greeks or Tsalkan greeks lived here, with the collapse of USSR, most of them left.

The district had a population of 2,326. According to the 2014 census, 47% of its population is Georgian, 38% Armenian, 7% Caucasus Greeks, and 7% Azerbaijanis. Up until the 1990s, Russian served as the language of interethnic communication and was the language of education in most of the schools in the Tsalka district.

Some of the Tsalkan Greeks were Turkophone, and are known as Urums. In the past, they used to be the majority in the town of Tsalka but now their numbers have considerably decreased due to their return to their homeland of Greece and due to emigration. Several thousand ethnic Georgians who had suffered from landslides in Svaneti and Adjara were settled in Tsalka in 1997-2006.

Tsalka in winter

The settlement of these newcomers sometimes led to ethnic tensions with Tsalka's original Greek and Armenian population. According to the 2014 Georgian census, there were only 2,113 Greeks in all of Kvemo Kartli, indicating a further massive drop in numbers of Tsalkan Greeks.

Abandoned houses in Tsalka

There are important historical monuments in Tsalka. Kldekari Fortress (ninth century) and the church of St.George in Dashbashi (tenth-eleventh centuries). Dashbashi canyon is also an interesting tourist attraction.

Mount Kazbek

| Outdoor Activities | 35 seen

Mount Kazbek, is a dormant stratovolcano and one of the major mountains of the Caucasus located on the border of Georgia's Kazbegi District and Russia's Republic of North Ossetia–Alania.

It is the third-highest peak in Georgia (after Mount Shkhara and Janga) and the seventh-highest summit in the Caucasus Mountains. Kazbek is also the second-highest volcanic summit in the Caucasus, after Mount Elbrus.

The summit lies directly to the west of the town of Stepantsminda and is the most prominent geographic feature of the area. Mount Kazbek is the highest peak of Eastern Georgia.

Mount Kazbek and Gergeti church

Made this photo in early April 2019 while staying for one night in Stepatsminda, see Hotel Stancia Kazbegi

The great views toward mount Kazbek can be seen also from the Gergeti church, if you prefer more adventure, you could climb to the Mount Kazbek, here is a local Georgian company organizing climbing tours to Mount Kazbek - mountainfreaks.ge

The plan of our expeditions has been prepared by us so that each of you will be able to get Kazbek in the maximal possible way. The plan assumes a gradual acclimatization, spreading the whole mountain action for a few days and a backup day, which will allow you to face the mountain safely if you are in good physical condition and do not have health contraindications (even without previous experience in high mountains). The most important thing is that during the whole trip our team will be with you – the leader of the expedition and certified high-mountain guides (also trained in the field of emergency medical services in the mountains), who will be responsible for your safety.

Kazbek is located on the Khokh Range, a mountain range which runs north of the Greater Caucasus Range, and which is pierced by the gorges of the Ardon and the Terek. At its eastern foot runs the Georgian Military Road through the pass of Darial 2,378 meters. The mountain itself lies along the edge of the Borjomi–Kazbegi Fault (which is a northern sub-ending of the North Anatolian Fault). The region is highly active tectonically, with numerous small earthquakes occurring at regular intervals. An active geothermal/hot spring system also surrounds the mountain. Kazbek is a potentially active volcano, built up of trachyte and sheathed with lava, and has the shape of a double cone, whose base lies at an altitude of 1,770 meters . Kazbek is the highest of the volcanic cones of the Kazbegi volcanic group which also includes Mount Khabarjina(3,142 metres).

Owing to the steepness of its slopes, the glaciers of Kazbek are not very large. The total combined area of all of Kazbek's glaciers is 135 km². The best-known glacier is the Dyevdorak (Devdaraki), which creeps down the north-eastern slope into a gorge of the same name, reaching a level of 2,295 meters (7,530 feet). Kazbek's other glaciers include the Mna, Denkara, Gergeti, Abano, and Chata. The recent collapse of the Kolka Glacier, located in a valley between Mt. Jimara and Kazbek in the year 2002 was attributed to solfatara volcanic activity along the northern slope of the mountain, although there was no eruption. In addition to the 2002 event, a massive collapse of the Devdaraki Glacier on the mountain's northeastern slope which occurred on August 20, 2014, led to the death of seven people. The glacier collapse dammed the Terek River in the Daryal Gorge and flooded the Georgian Military Highway.

The area around Mount Kazbek was designated a nature reserve by the Soviet government in 1979, and includes beech forests, subalpine forests and alpine meadows. Many of the plants and animals in the reserve are endemic to the Caucasus region.

Hotel Stancia Kazbegi

Hotel Stancia in Kazbegi is a great and cheaper alternative to the more stylish and lavish Rooms Kazbegi hotel.

Featuring a garden and a restaurant, Stancia Kazbegi is set in Stepantsminda. Among the various facilities of this property are a terrace and ski storage space. The hotel also offers free WiFi as well as a paid airport shuttle service.

We booked Hotel Stancia in Kazbegi in early April 2019 and paid around GEL 150 (USD 56) for a one night stay, I should add that the listed price on booking.com was GEL 180 (USD 67) per night. By booking directly we saved USD 11. Nice. Not that I'm a fan of such a booking system, but as it was an unplanned stop in Kazbegi, seems like a nice little perk.

Hotel “Talsi” is located in a picturesque place, next to Vilkumuiza lake. Hotel "TALSI" offers 53 different standard Single, Double rooms and comfortable Suites.

I booked Hotel Talsi, for a couple of days (nights) in August 2017. As there are not many hotels located in Talsi, Hotel Talsi seemed like a logical choice, which actually was quite true. As I traveled without a car, I managed to organize a taxi service from the hotel during my short stay in Talsi town.

Hotel Talsi offers comfortable rooms, all featuring a bathroom with a shower.

Trading Bitcoin / Ethereum Options (Selling Puts) on Deribit - Part 1

| Crypto | 56 seen

Deribit is my latest discovery from the crazy crypto world. It all started with simple buy-and-hold operations back in 2017.

What followed was, a day trading on Poloniex,  I even built a custom Ethereum mining rig. I have played with cloud mining contracts from hashflare,  and now I've found my way into Bitcoin / Ethereum options trading.

It's not that I would call myself an expert in options trading, in fact, I have made just a couple of put sales in the regular stock market - I tend to write puts against dividend stocks I would love to have (if assigned)

Update: This article has been originally written back in May 2020, some things may have changed ever since. If you are interested to learn more, consider booking an online consultation with me: Selling Covered Call Options on Crypto (BTC/ETH/SOL)

In the case of Bitcoin / Ethereum, unfortunately, there are no dividends, and taking into account high volatility the idea of selling puts might actually sound wrong, instead, it seems some should buy calls. Anyhow, I'm no expert on options trading, and the following written should be taken with a grain of salt

Disclosure:  This article contains affiliate links to deribit.com bitcoin options trading website, by clicking on links on this page and by investing with deribit, I will earn affiliate income at no cost to you. Also, I'm not a financial advisor and I don't give you any advice, I'm just sharing my own experience. Investments in stocks, funds, bonds or cryptos are risk investments and you could lose some or all of your money. Do your due diligence before investing in any kind of asset.

Depositing Funds

As I had some ETH both on Coinbase and Poloniex accounts, I thought cool - I will make a direct transfer, but on the deribit Ethereum deposit pages it was said that exchanges might not work and better to use an Ethereum wallet for transferring funds to deribit.

Warning about depositing funds on Deribit

Luckily I had a MyEtherWallet and I transferred some ETH from Poloniex to MyEtherWallet

It was not long and ETH was already in MyEtherWallet, next was to transfer it to Deiribit.

To play safe I decided to transfer just 0.5 ETH to Deribit (equals $81.95)

In a matter of another couple of minutes -  and ETH was deposited on Deiribit.

Now it was time to get hands dirty and make the first options trade on the Deiribit platform

Writing a put on Deribit

I decided to start low with writing puts against ETH.

Unfortunately, there were not many options for ETH, just four with expiration today, with expiration after a week, two months, and five months.

I made the following put
Order Type: Market
SELL ETH-28JUN19-100-P x 1
Margin =  0.10261162

I was hoping to see my total balance increase, but instead, I saw it actually decreasing. Strange. Made another put sell, this time:

ETH-28JUN19-150-P

Again, the total balance decreased.

Made more put sells, still total balance decreasing.

Then under the transaction log I found all my trades listed, and also this was the first place where I finally saw the balance increasing:

Transaction log

Now, there are more questions than answers right now. Because I still don't understand, if I have made 3 put sell today, collected in premium 0.0984 eth, how comes that my equity balance is 0.4749, not 0.5984, also where is this premium?

Either there is some catch, or there is something I don't just get it?

Anyhow, here is what it should look like, I deposited 0.5 eth today and sold 3 different premiums with one expiration day on June 28, 2019, In total, I collected 0.0984 eth. Sounds like a 19.8% yield in less than 78 days to me.

With today's ETH/USD exchange rates that would give me $16.34 in premium. Humble, but for getting my foot wet, pretty good.

Seems I will come out with Part 2, after June 28. Because right now, despite I have successfully transferred funds to the platform and made 3 put sells I still don't understand how this platform is operating.

If you want to give it a try and bear the risk, here is my affiliate link to the Deribit signup page, by using this link I will get an affiliate income at no cost to you,

Birtvisi Canyon in Georgia

| Tourism objects | 33 seen

Birtvisi canyon is located in the Tetri-Tskaro district in Kvemo Kartli  region about an hour drive from Tbilisi. Canyon is ideally suited for those loving hiking (see: Hiking In Birtvisi Canyon (Hidden Trails Of Georgia)) and outdoor activities.

There are many smaller and larger gorges, rocks and of course amazing nature. Also, the Birtvisi fortress is located here (which I still haven't found after some 4 years of inactive searches).

The canyon is managed by Georgian Agency of Protected areas, to learn more see: http://apa.gov.ge/en

Birtvisi Canyon in Georgia

Birtvisi is essentially a natural rocky fortress of 1 km², secured by walls and towers, the most prominent of which – known as Sheupovari ("Obstinate") – tops the tallest rock in the area. Various accessory structures, an aqueduct included, have also survived.

Hiking in Birtvisi canyon

In written sources, Birtvisi is first mentioned as a possession of the Arab amir of Tiflis of which he was divested by the Georgian nobles Liparit, Duke of Kldekari and Ivane Abazasdze in 1038. In medieval Georgia, Birtvisi entertained a reputation of an impregnable stronghold whose master could control the entire strategic Algeti gorge. The Turco-Mongol amir Timur notably reduced the fortress during one of his invasions of Georgia in 1403.

After the partition of the Kingdom of Georgia later in the 15th century, Birtvisi was within the borders of the Kingdom of Kartli and in possession of the princes Baratashvili.

My 17 Year Old Dividend Portfolio (From Single Nasdaq Baltic Stock)

| Investments | 11 seen

The inspiration for this post came from a Dividend Empire article titled My 33-Year-Old Dividend Growth Portfolio.

Also, I would like to mention that a couple of weeks ago I met a fellow Italian investor here in Tbilisi (Massimo, if you are reading this -  hi to you), we spent about 90 minutes enjoying a cappuccino and discussing investments in Tbilisi, Georgia, investments in oil, gas, and of course dividend investing. Massimo told me he has been investing for about 17 years and that lead me to realize that in fact, me too - I have been investing since 2001/2002.

I apologize for the somewhat misleading title.  Unfortunately, I do not actually have such a portfolio.  But I sure can model one.

Now, about 17 years ago I was 16/17 years old, and in fact, bought my first stock using privatization certificates. I bought Latvijas Kugnieciba stock. Which latter in 2005 I sold for about 500 or 600 Latvian lats and bought a Canon camcorder which didn't last long (my mom drowned camcorder somewhere in the Red Sea). Later on, around 2007 I bought some Lietuvos Dujos stock (which again I sold soon). I returned to investing in Baltic stocks once more back in 2017.

Since 2017 I've invested in 16 Baltic stocks, made a dividend income EUR 706.10 ( EUR 265 in 2017, EUR 386 in 2018, and looking an about EUR 500 in 2019)

This time I decided to invest only in dividend-paying Nasdaq Baltic stocks, see Dividend Paying Stocks In Nasdaq Baltic Market By Yield

Returning to 2002,  I doubt I was able to buy Latvijas Gāze stock back in 2002 with privatization certificates, and that's why I will use hard cash calculations for the further

I had 22 privatization certificates back, in 2002. The price for one privatization certificate (when used in stock purchases was LVL 28), I had a buying power of LVL 616 back in 2002. Now, since 2014, the EURO is used instead of Lats in Latvia (1 EUR=0.702804 LVL) EUR 876.48 - was the capital I invested in Latvijas Kugnieciba.

Latvijas Gāze is one of the safest stocks from the Nasdaq Baltic list, in fact, Latvijas gāze is the only company which has paid a dividend since 1999, I decided to model, what if instead of buying Latvijas Kugnieciba instead I would have bought Latvijas Gāze back in 2002?

The stock price for Latvijas Gāze April - December 2002

I don't remember correctly on which date precisely I bought my stocks, but I remember it happened somewhere around April / May, that's why I will use for this example extreme values (the lowest and the highest)

  • The lowest EUR 9.7 per share (April 2002)
  • The highest EUR 10.7 per share (May 2002)

Let's do simple maths:

  • lowest price:EUR 876.48 / EUR 9.7 = 90 shares (no fractional shares here)
  • highest price: EUR 876.48/10.7 = 81 shares

Latvijas Gāze has paid annual, sometimes bi-annual and sometimes special dividend ever since 1999.

With current trading price in 2019 at around EUR 10.2-EUR 10.5 per share, I would say I would have neither value growth nor value drop, the price in 2019 surprisingly is the same it was back in 2002.

Dividends

Now the real magic happens with dividends - I would have earned ~ EUR 955 - EUR 1,062 in dividends in the past 17 years. Nothing much, just EUR 56 - EUR 62 annually. On the other hand that's just from one investment back in 2002.

Dividends Reinvested

To make it more interesting I decided to see how much I would earn in case of DRIP (dividend reinvestment plan), which unfortunately isn't available for Latvijas Gāze nor is offered from any stockbroker (at least I'm not familiar with).

With dividends reinvested  I would have earned ~ EUR 1,590 - EUR 1,844 in dividends in the past 17 years. Better for about 30-50% if compared to not reinvesting dividends) EUR 93 - EUR 108 annually. The total value for the portfolio would grow from about EUR 876 in 2002 to EUR 2,274 - EUR 2,662.

Dollar cost averaging

Last, but bot not least, let's do a simple maths example on buying more shares once in a year, paying a fixed price. For the ease of this example, I will use the average price of EUR 9.5 per share

My total investment in Latvijas Gāze after 17 years would be EUR 876.48 * 17 =  EUR 14,900.16, which would give me about 1568 shares in the company. In 2018 it would give a dividend income of about EUR 909. Now that's some serious growth compared to just EUR 56 - EUR 108 annually.

No, you cannot get here cloud storage or keyword ideas for your next AdWords campaign, instead, there are tasty Georgian lemonades and other goodies you can find in almost every regular kiosk in Georgia.

First discovered back in 2011, in April 2019, the Google Market was still there, though seemed closed at the time I visited it.

Kobi Gudauri Cable Car Station

| Tourism objects | 326 seen

Kobi Gudari cable car has been opened for public since January 2019.  I first discovered in it early April 2019, while having a road trip Tbilisi - Gudauri - Kazbegi (Stepatsminda).

Not far from the cable car station there is located Kobi mineral water plant.

Kobi cable station

Gudauri - Georgian Winter Capital for skiing, snowboarding, paragliding and heli-skiing

According to agenda.ge the ropeway is 7.5km long and the total cost to build it was 81 million lari. The cable car connects  Kobi with Gudauri in 15 minutes.

The cable car will serve to make both Kobi and Gudauri more functional winter resorts, offering easier transportation in the area.

Kobi - Gudauri cable cars

Chiatura Cable-ways Central Station

Kobi is a village in Stepantsminda, while Gudauri is a ski resort located on the south-facing plateau of the Greater Caucasus Mountain Range.

The distance between Kobi and Gudauri is 15.2km and by car you can cover this distance in about 22 minutes – but since landslides and heavy snow can force the car route through Jvari pass to shut in the winter, the new cable car will help the commuters or skiers transport back and forth anyway.

Now, everything is good - the only concern, there should have been built a normal parking lot. On the other hand, seems that there is a good reason to invest in Kobi, hotels, hostels, ski rentals e.t.c

Bīne restaurant is located in Talsi, on Krišjāņa Valdemāra street 13, close to the Hotel Talsi.

That's how I actually discovered this place back in 2017, while I stayed for a couple of nights at Hotel Talsi this restaurant/cafeteria was the closest dining place from the hotel.

Restaurant Bīne serves typical Latvian cuisine for very affordable prices. Actually, this place is more a bistro than a restaurant (food is heated in the micro oven).
